With the majority of attacks now targeting backup repositories and recovery times stretching into weeks. Organisations face operational downtime, lost revenue, regulatory exposure, and reputational damage making ransom payments more likely. The panel emphasised that backup alone is no longer sufficient. True cyber resilience depends on tested, high‑performance recovery, true immutability, and on‑premise architectures that enable fast restores when connectivity to the cloud may be unavailable.
Public cloud and tape still have roles, particularly for retention, but they are poorly suited to rapid recovery of large environments. For mid‑market organisations, enterprise‑grade resilience does not require enterprise‑scale budgets, but rather the right scalable, hardened, and easy‑to‑manage architecture.
Modern ransomware has shifted the conversation from “Can we back up?” to “How fast can we recover?”, and organisations that prioritise on‑premise, immutable, and regularly tested recovery capabilities are far better positioned to survive attacks, meet regulatory demands, and avoid the true cost of downtime.
